The Statue of Liberty in French is La Liberté éclairant le monde or Liberty Enlightening the World. The French are big on liberty - their motto is "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" + they overthrew their own monarchy + they supported America vs Britain - and gave us this statue with a torch as a symbol of freedom for the rest of the world.

We gave Lady Liberty a hammer for the same reason.
